do you have a "cite," or whatever, for that Woolf quote about the common reader?

Yes, it's from the beginning of Woolf's essay of the same name, compiled in the essay collection of the same name. Very easy to remember.

I gather that you also have a dog who is always on the wrong side of the door.

I think the main difference between dogs and people is that we know both sides of the door are equally wrong.
