I visited my friend
Scott Hill's blog this morning and saw that he'd posted photos of his English classroom--a very Romantic-looking setup (note the capital "R") that made me all faux-nostalgiac for what might have been . . . that is to say, what wasn't in existence when I was in high school: a room that made a student excited to be a student.

I couldn't post on Scott's blog, but I think it perfectly expressed his personality and philosophy of teaching. Real chalkboards! What a treat that is, especially in the afternoon sun, to be cozied up with literature in that room.
Yeah, what is this white board movement? With those pens that always run out? Get rid of them.
Sorry my blog wouldn't let you comment, Sheila . . I agree about the chalkboards, too. As a student, I remember coveting the teacher's right to write on that big blank slate. I think I imagined it to be an amazingly smooth, tactile pleasure, like drawing with milk. It turns out it's not quite that nice, but still . . better than markers.
